EL CAJON — The Calipatria High boys’ basketball squad fell to Parkland High of El Paso, Texas, 64-45, on Thursday, in the second round of Granite Hill High’s Christmas tournament.

Gilbert Perez accounted for 22 points, followed by Evan Franklin with seven, K.J. Ellison with six, and Nick Spence with five.

On Wednesday, the Hornets defeated Mountain Empire High of Pine Valley, 82-66. Leading scorers of that game were Perez with 27 points, Franklin with 20, Ellison with 16, and Nate Mata with nine.

The Hornets (6-4) play again at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, although their opponents have yet to be determined.



Spartans remain undefeated

CHULA VISTA — The Central Union High boys’ basketball team downed Point Loma High of San Diego on Thursday, 57-47, on the second day of the Chula Vista Holiday Tournament.

Jakob Salgado led the way for the Spartans with 21 points, closely followed by teammate Luis Vizcaino, who racked up 20 points as well as 15 rebounds.

This came on the heels of a first-round 67-51 win against host Chula Vista High on Wednesday. In that game, Bisciano had 23 points and Salgado had sixteen.

Central Union continues in tourney play today as they square off against Huntington Park High of Los Angeles.



Scots squeezed by Knights

VISTA — The Vincent Memorial High boys’ basketball team beat Desert Christian High of Lancaster in a close one, 55-54, on Thursday’s opening round of the Tri-City Christmas Tournament.

Carlos Ayala was the top scorer of the night with 18 points as well as seven rebounds. Michael Henderson totaled 15 points and five steals and Matthew O’Brien finished with eight points and 15 rebounds.

The Scots (7-3, 1-0 ML) play today against Tri-City Christian High at San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas.



Bulldogs blow early lead

EL CAJON — The Calexico High Bulldogs boys’ basketball squad fell to Granite Hills High, 68-38, on Wednesday at Granite Hill’s Christmas tournament.

Anthony Rubio scored all 11 points in the fourth quarter, while Jose Luis Galindo totaled 10 points. Raymundo Franco only accounted for six points but accrued an impressive 19 rebounds.



Eagles winless at tourney

SAN DIEGO — The Southwest High boys’ basketball team came up short against San Ysidro High of San Diego on Thursday, 68-59, in the second round of the Montgomery High School Christmas Classic.

Chris Arambula totaled 18 points, sinking four three-pointers, while teammate Brandon Martinez had 14 points, ten rebounds and blocked five shots. Luke Sanders had 11 points.

On Wednesday, the Eagles lost to Hilltop High of Chula Vista, 41-31. Arambula had 10 points, while Martinez had seven and Edward Romero had five.

Southwest stands 0-2 in the tournament. They play Valley Center High today at 4:45 at Montgomery High School in San Diego.



GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Wildcats go 1-1 in tournament

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High girls’ basketball squad lost, 40-37, to Monte Vista High of Spring Valley on Thursday, in the second round of the Aztec Holiday Tournament.

Junior point guard Meriah Overton scored 13 points in the loss.

Prior to that, however, the Wildcats prevailed against Castle Park High of Chula Vista, 44-31, with Overton racking up 19 points.

At 1-1, the Wildcats are still alive and will play again today at 3 p.m., against Preuss UCSD High of La Jolla.
