The Central Union High boys’ tennis team beat Southwest High with a points tiebreaker after both finished 9-9 in their Imperial Valley League matchup at Central on Wednesday.

Central won, 82-71, to get its first win in league (1-1) and improve to 2-2 overall.

“I was very pleased with my team’s performance. I just thought they all tried really hard and luckily we got more games,” Central head coach Dan Williams said.

In singles for the Spartans, No. 1 David Armenta lost to Southwest’s No. 1 Darian Flores, 4-6, beat No. 2 Mo Hamby, 6-2, and lost to No. 3 Zev Dutta, 4-6.

Central’s No. 2 Esteban Galvan lost to Flores, 0-6, Hamby, 5-7, and Dutta, 6-7.

The Spartans’ No. 3 Ernesto Gutierrez lost to Flores, 0-6, Hamby, 4-6, Dutta, 6-7.

The Southwest doubles teams were unavailable.

For the Spartans in doubles, No. 1 team of Jose Lopez and Ramses Valenzuela won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. No. 2 team of Brandon Beltran and Doh Kim won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 3 team of Ian Virey and Nathan Vasquez lost, 4-6, and won, 6-2, 6-2.

Central will play at Brawley Union High at 3:15 p.m. Monday. Southwest (1-1 IVL) will host Vincent Memorial High at the same time and day.
