It’s the unofficial kickoff to the high school season of track and field in the Imperial Valley and the first look at what the local schools have to offer.
The 57th annual Desert Classic Relays will be held Saturday at Central Union High and will include all the local teams along with Otay Ranch, St. Xavier Preps and Yuma Catholic High.
The meet will also include girls’ IVL defending champion Southwest High and the three-time defending boys’ champion Central.
“It will be the first look that we get at the Valley teams,” Central head coach Ron Shane said.
The Spartans will also use it as a measuring stick.
“I wanna see how we match up with Otay Ranch,” Shane said. “We did a really good job last week at the Tiger Relays (Morse High) and I wanna see if we can continue seeing PRs.”
The only thing that could hamper this weekend’s competition is the weather.
The Weather Channel’s website has a forecast of partly cloudy with a 10 percent chance of rain. There will be winds of 15 mph heading west.
“It all depends on the weather, I saw the weather forecast and it didn’t look good,” Shane said. “I’m biting my tongue, hoping the wind and rain go away from us and stay in San Diego.”
The field events will start at 9 a.m. and the track and events at 9:30 a.m.
“There’s something for everybody,” Shane said. “It will be a good chance for everybody to participate.”
