(AP) Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson says he unknowingly participated in three-way telephone calls with recruits for which the school is penalizing him.

IU says Sampson will not receive a scheduled $500,000 raise and his team will lose one scholarship for next season after violating NCAA-imposed sanctions on phone calls.

The violations happened as Sampson was under a one-year ban from
off-campus recruiting over impermissible calls he made while coaching at Oklahoma. As part of the penalty, Sampson also was banned from participating in three-way calls.

An IU review found Sampson was involved in 10 improper three-way
calls. Sampson says he and his assistants tried to abide by the
sanctions and there was no intent to break the rules.
