ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A prosecutor has decided not to charge Michigan wide receiver Mario Manningham after police say they found him with three Vicodin pills given to him by a teammate.

Manningham, 21, of Warren, Ohio, the 19th-ranked Wolverines' leading receiver, could have been charged with a two-year felony after police found the prescription painkiller on him during a traffic stop April 25 in Monroe County. He had been prescribed Vicodin after a knee surgery in January, authorities said, but it had not been refilled.

Two other men in the car, former Michigan defensive back Johnny Sears Jr., 20, of Fresno, Calif., and Deion White, 17, also of Warren, were charged this week with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Monroe County Prosecutor William Nichols said Friday he decided not to charge Manningham after verifying his surgery and prescription with his doctor, as well as his cooperation with police and lack of criminal record.

"Although our office believes Mr. Manningham may have used poor judgment in not immediately obtaining a refill prescription from his physician, we do not believe this incident rises to the level of a criminal offense," Nichols said in a statement.

Messages were left Friday seeking comment from Manningham at two telephone numbers listed for him in the university's online directory.

Sears was dismissed from the team in September for an undisclosed reason. Athletic department spokesman Bruce Madej said Friday his department had no comment on the incident or decision.

Sears, White and Manningham, who told police he was going to visit relatives in his hometown, were pulled over near the Michigan-Ohio boundary, The Monroe Evening News reported.

Nichols told The Ann Arbor News and The Detroit News that authorization of charges were delayed by chemical analysis and obtaining a statement from the officer who made the stop.

Manningham, a junior, has caught 46 passes for 658 yards and six touchdowns in seven games this season.
