SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Brandon Smith, a defensive back from New Brunswick, N.J., on Saturday announced his commitment to play next season at Michigan.

Smith, 6-2, 210 pounds, said he hopes to play free safety for the Wolverines. He played his final high school game Saturday when he had five tackles and one pass deflection in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Smith said the final decision came down to Michigan and South Carolina. He said he leaned toward South Carolina before Gamecocks' defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix left on Dec. 11 to join Houston Nutt's staff at Mississippi.

"I wanted to play for him," Smith said. "I decided that after South Carolina lost Coach Nix and Michigan got coach (Rich) Rodriguez that Michigan was the best fit for me."
