WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue forward Scott Martin has decided to transfer from Purdue.

Martin played averaged 8.5 points per game and had eight starts. He said he'll leave the program on good terms.

"I truly valued my time here at Purdue," he said in a news release. "I made many great friendships and met a lot of great people. I am thankful to the coaching staff and my teammates for the opportunity they have given me. I feel it is in my best interest to take a different route for my basketball career."

Martin was part of a highly-ranked recruiting class that included E'Twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson. Martin and Hummel were high school teammates at Valparaiso.

While Moore and Hummel had impressive first seasons and Johnson showed potential with a big NCAA tournament game against Baylor, Martin was inconsistent. With all five starters returning next season, playing time might have been hard for Martin to find.

"We'll help him any way we can, and wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future," Purdue coach Matt Painter said in the statement.
