SOUTH BEND — Ryan Richter is a top-flight student athlete.

The Saint Joseph’s High School senior carries a 4.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, backed up with baseball scholarship to Notre Dame where he plans to pitch full-time.

"I figure if you’re going to do something, you might as well work hard at it and fulfill your potential … there’s no reason not to," Richter told WSBT Sports.

"Ryan is just a great athlete," beamed coach John Gumpf.

Sounds pretty good? Of course it is. The thing is, it could even get better with the opportunities that will come across the street.

“I think what he’s going to be great at is [being] a pitcher,” Gumpf said. “He hasn’t done much pitching; once he becomes a pitcher I think you’re going to see great things from Ryan Richter.”

"I don’t think it’s hit me yet,” Richter said. “All my friends are going there … it’s beyond words right now. Just going by there every day on the way to school, I’m really happy, I’m excited.”

Congratulations to Ryan Richter, the Burger King Outstanding Student Athlete of the Week!
