INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Contractors say they will partially demolish the RCA Dome with a controlled explosion in October.

Tom Scheele, senior vice president of Shiel Sexton Incorporated, says imploding the stadium's upper seating section will be cheaper and faster than using traditional demolition methods, which will be used for lower sections.

In May, exterior signs will be removed. In August, the fabric roof will be deflated.

The RCA Dome opened in 1984 and cost $82 million to build. The new home of the Indianapolis Colts will be the $700 million Lucas Oil Stadium.

The 63,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 15, about a week before the Colts have a preseason game.
