GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan High School Athletic Association plans to file its fifth appeal since a federal judge ruled more than six years ago that the scheduling of prep sports seasons discriminated against some female student-athletes.

The MHSAA filed a notice of appeal Tuesday with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.

The group is appealing the judge's order that it owes about $7.4 million in legal fees and interest stemming from its loss of a sex-discrimination lawsuit filed in 1998 by two Grand Rapids-area mothers of female athletes.

The filing happened one day ahead of a 30-day deadline and preserves the MHSAA's rights in the case.

Attorneys are trying to work out a settlement.
