SOUTH BEND — We know he likes to speed. But that didn't stop a South Bend racer from slowing down for a special award.

The city and county honored Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman’s accomplishments with a new city sign.

The county also dedicated a section of Lincoln Way between Lexington and Mayflower in his name.

“It's an honor to be here,” Ryan Newman said. “I thank all the people for coming out and [I'm] really kinda wondering if we can up the speed limit in that section. I saw it was 45. Maybe we can just do 54, something just a little bit faster."

“The amount of pride ... in this community for you Ryan, you've even converted my 70-something mother to a NASCAR fan," said County Councilman Randall Przybysz.

Newman graduated from the old LaSalle High School.

Who really cares. It's crazy Ryan Newman get a bigger street than Martin Luther King. Has the mayor even addressed all the violence that we have been experienceing while he was over in Germany?

Why didn't they name Roosevelt Rd. after him? That's where the speeding is going on. LaSalle, home of two Nascar drivers.

Anyone else hear the following on sunny 101 this A.M. When Ryan Newman (another proud LaSalle grad) was back in town earlier this week to have the stretch by the airport named after him, our great buffoon mayor - not once, but twice at the microphone in front of the crowd - called him "Randy" Newman. Was not on TV or in the rag, but Sunny 101.5's morning crew has been airing it. I'm told people in the crowd were yelling, "It's Ryan!"
