Manti Te’o of Honolulu, ranked the nation’s top linebacker, on Wednesday signed a national letter-of-intent with Notre Dame.

"We are just absolutely delighted that he joined us here today," Irish coach Charlie Weis said during his signing day press conference. "There's a linebacker that's going to make an instant impact for us."

Te’o is the 17th player to join Notre Dame’s recruiting class of 2009. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Te’o chose the Irish over USC and UCLA. He made 128 tackles as a senior, intercepted three passes and blocked one punt.

Earlier, Los Angeles-area safety Byron Moore chose USC over the Irish. Also, two players who had been linked to Notre Dame signed with UCLA. Cornerback Marlon Pollard, a one-time ND commit, picked the Bruins, as did Manassas, Va., athlete Damien Thigpen. And Tallahassee, Fla., safety Jawanza Starling announced Wednesday that he will sign with USC.
