SOUTH BEND — A two-month process to determine whether he belongs among the best in basketball convinced Notre Dame power forward Luke Harangody to return for his senior season.

Irish coach Mike Brey announced Harangody's plans on Twitter around 3:30 p.m. Brey and Harangody were not available for comment and no formal press conference is scheduled Monday. Harangody will discuss his decision Tuesday afternoon on campus.

Brey did offer his thoughts in a university press release.

“Luke has had my full support from day one and whatever final decision he made, I was going to support him,” Brey said. “With that being said, I am excited that he is going to be back.”

Harangody had until 5 p.m. Monday to decide whether to return to school, where he will challenge the all-time scoring record of former Irish great Austin Carr, or remain in the NBA draft. Harangody currently is eighth among the school’s all-time leading scorers with 1,823 points. Carr’s mark of 2,560 points has stood since 1971.

“That’s a (heck) of an incentive to come back, to be the all-time leading scorer,” former Irish All-American power forward Troy Murphy told the Tribune in January when discussing Harangody’s pro prospects.

Harangody returned to school after he did not receive a guarantee that he would be selected in the draft’s first round, which carries a three-year contract. Many draft observers believed Harangody was an early- to mid-second round selection.
