BENTON HARBOR — Jack Nicklaus, the man who won 18 majors, is putting the final touches on his latest 18 — the Golf Club at Harbor Shores.

"I think the golf course is not only a good golf course, but it's beautiful," Nicklaus said Monday. "It flows nicely. It's going to be something this area is proud of and be happy it's here."

Nicklaus spent several hours on Monday morning fine tuning the final design of the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th holes. The discussions ranged from moving bunkers to green contour.

"Every time we go to a hole I look at the back tees and say, 'I want to put good golf shots in here.' I go to the members tees and say, 'I want to put good golf shots in here.' I go to the women's tees and say, 'I want to put good golf shots in here,'" Nicklaus says of his design strategy.

"But I also want to make it aesthetically pleasing and fun to play. That's the combination."

Nicklaus estimates that the course is 85 percent complete.

Nine hole play is scheduled to begin on July 13th.
