NOTRE DAME — Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis begins the 2009 season with one, strong message: Show me!

"I could sit here and tell you how lofty of goals I have," Weis said during Media Day, "or my expectations, but guess what? It's time for us to back them up."

That is the underlying message of the day. The message Weis will continue to deliver to his team as they progress through training camp.

"Fellas ... don't tell me about expectations. Start showing me."

That's what the Notre Dame players can expect to hear each day, beginning Saturday when the team hits the field for its first practice.

Weis did give some indications that 2009 could, and should, be better than 2008. With 16 returning starts on offense and defense, last season's losses should lead to this season's gains.

"I think that Notre Dame's in a good place right now. That's what I think."

But don't expect those feel-good feelings to be repeated by the players. Weis' team has four weeks of hard work ahead, before the season opener against Nevada.

"You'll hear it from our players. We're proud to be at the University of Notre Dame, but its time for our product to back that up."

"That's what we intend to do. But let's not talk about it. Let's go and do something about it."
