The Jimmy Clausen Era Begins

(WSBT) After their worst season-opening loss ever, Notre Dame and Charlie Weis aren't wasting any time in naming the new starting quarterback.

Jimmy Clausen's name has been a mainstay since he committed last spring, and now, the freshman gets the starting nod for Saturday's game in Happy Valley in hopes of jump-starting a stalled Irish-offense.

Weis wanted to make it clear that it wasn't based on what happened on Saturday against Georgia Tech.

"I'm not looking to play musical quarterbacks,” Weis told the media Tuesday.

And with that, it appears the "Jimmy Clausen Era" at Notre Dame will be ushered in.

Clausen's recently operated-on throwing elbow just got back into shape toward the end of last week, but not quickly enough to start against Georgia Tech.

That's no longer the case, and after the team scored just three points, a Weis-low, and threw for just 130 yards, the coach didn't waste anytime in pulling the trigger.

“His arm’s back to a full go, managing the team, I think he gives us the best chance to win,” Weis explained.

And likely the best chance to put everyone back in their comfort zone on offense, and that includes the head coach.

“I don't think any of them should feel comfortable with how we played last week, I mean I think that they all should feel uncomfortable,” Weis said. “But I think that there's a comfort zone when you have more familiarity with what you're doing.”

The National Player of the Year in High School, Clausen's first start will come in front of 107,000 people in Happy Valley against a Nittany Lions defense that will surely attempt to follow the blueprint laid out by Georgia Tech.
