Senior quarterback Tommy Rees was cleared to practice Tuesday, and head coach Brian Kelly expects his starter to play this Saturday when Notre Dame plays at the Air Force Academy.
"We believe that Tommy's going to be ready", Kelly said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday. "He was cleared today to practice. So we're moving forward that he will be the starter."
Rees was injured in the 3rd quarter of Notre Dame's 14-10 win over USC on Saturday. Notre Dame's offense managed to gain just 38 yards, and scored no points without Rees under center.
"We won't overwork (Rees) in practice, but we'll prepare him accordingly", Kelly says of the practice plan this week, acknowledging that both backup quarterback Andrew Hendrix and 3rd string quarterback Malik Zaire will get a little more work than normal.
"We'll get Andrew some first team reps and get Malik some second team reps".
Kelly seems optimistic that Rees will continue to heal as the week goes on, and will be prepared to play for Notre Dame as the weekend approaches.
"I think we're all very confident on Tuesday. It's not Wednesday or Thursday. I think if it's later in the week you're more concerned. But knowing that it's Tuesday, we feel a lot more confident that Tommy will be prepared and ready for Saturday."
