College notes: Area quartet meet on hardwood in Madonna vs. Lawrence Tech contest
Jake Mullin, a 2012 Petoskey grad and starting guard for the Blue Devils, led Lawrence Tech with 13 points; while Zak Lewis, also a 2012 Petoskey grad, hit a big 3-pointer during a Madonna 21-4 second half to account for three of his four points.
Jay Redman, a 2012 Boyne City grad, scored four and dished out two assists in 21 minutes for Lawrence Tech.
Redman earned player of the game for his defensive efforts by Blue Devil head coach, Tom Kempf, in the previous game which was a non-league win over Purdue University North Central, 57-51.
The quartet of players will meet again this season on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
Lawrence Tech is 2-14 overall, 1-7 in the WHAC, while Madonna improved to 11-5 overall, 6-2 in league.
— Sophomore guard Kerby Tamm hit two 3-pointers to account for her six points while playing 16 minutes for the Central Michigan University womens’ basketball team in a overtime loss, 78-72, to San Diego State during the opening round of the Surf N’ Turf Holiday Basketball Classic in San Diego.
Tamm, a 2011 Petoskey grad, scored six points and had one assist while playing eight minutes in a 73-65 win over the University of Texas during the final round of the tournament.
Tamm is 19-of-44 from 3-point range and is second in both attempts and percentage made at .432 for the Chippewas this season.
Central Michigan is 6-6 overall. The Chippewas will start their MAC schedule on Thursday, Jan. 10, by traveling to Toledo.
— Junior forward Joe Keedy had a career high 11 rebounds while scoring 11 points with two steals for Swarthmore (Pa.) College in a 75-56 loss to St. Mary’s (Md.) College during the opening round of the Seahawk Holiday Basketball Classic in St. Mary’s, Maryland.
Keedy, a Petoskey grad, had one point and four rebounds while playing 18 minutes during a 97-67 loss to State University of New York at Old Westbury during the tournament’s final round.
Swarthmore is 3-8 overall.
— Tanner McCune, a 2012 Boyne City grad, scored four points and grabbed three rebounds for Oakland Community College during a non-league loss, 87-56, to Lake Land (Ill.) College.
