50 years ago

— Some 200 fans followed the Petoskey High School basketball team to a Class B regional championship game at the Central Michigan University Fieldhouse. The Northmen, the surprise winners of their district, would lose to Ludington, 76-56. Doug Treloar scored 20 points, but was outdone by Ludington’s 6-foot-4 Van Tillotson, who scored 30.

— Led by John Pearl scoring 16 points, Charlevoix won a Class C regional semifinal game, 65-47, over Roscommon. The Rayders lost in the regional final to Frankfort, 52-48.

— Northern Lakes Class D League winner Boyne Falls lost to Brimley, 58-52, in a regional championship game.  Don Kullik scored 18 points in his final high school game for the Loggers, while Leonard Puroll added 12.

— The final winners of the 1961-62 Petoskey News-Review Winter Fishing Contest were Frank Barnes, Burt Lake, 1-pound, 14-ounce perch; Bob Ford, Levering, 7.9-pound walleye; Irving Drost, Charlevoix, 16.15-pound pike; Chester Mead, Harbor Springs, 2.2-pound cisco; Oliver Jodway, Boyne City, 10.2-pound lake trout.

— Sepp Oberthaler, Mission Hills pro, won the Nub’s Nob Professional Ski Race $600 purse with a combined score of 135.8. The filed consisted of 13 professional skiers, plus area amateurs.

40 years ago

— Ross Blumke scored 26 points in Alanson’s 69-57 loss to Lake City in a Class D state quarterfinal basketball game. It was the Vikings first quarterfinal in Alanson school history. The Vikings were coached by Carson Workman.

Gary Ross of Petoskey ended the speed skating season by winning the Towne & Country Invitational in Cleveland. He swept the 220-, 440- and 880-yard dashes, and matched the invitational record in the 220 with a time of 21.4 seconds.

30 years ago

— Charlevoix defeated Rogers City, 65-41, in the Class C boys basketball regional semifinal. Coach Dave Smith lauded the efforts of Craig Klooster, George Smith and Mike Loper.

— Mark Lauer, Rich Kowalski and Rob Kowalski led Harbor Springs to an 83-78 Class D regional semifinal win over Inland Lakes at Lake Superior State College. Harbor Springs, 22-2, would face Cedarville in the regional final.

— Gary Adgate of Boyne City was the leader by a slim 25 points in the Peugeot Eastern Championships of Professional Skiing. Adgate, the 1980-81 Grand Prix Central Tour and World Skier Rookie of the Year, won three races in 1982, with four remaining. Each Peugeut winner received $25,000.

— Petoskey fell to Beaverton, 61-60, in overtime in a Class B regional semifinal game. “We played with our heads up all season,” Petoskey coach Dennis Starkey said. The Northmen started the season 4-7, and took a 12-game win streak into the game against Beaverton. The Northmen won a second straight district championship, beating Gaylord in the final. It was the first time Petoskey had won back-to-back district titles since it claimed three straight from 1977-79.

— Don Jess scored a running layup with 4 seconds remaining to give Charlevoix a win in a Class C district championship game. “He behaved like a four-year senior, even though he is a sophomore,” Charlevoix coach Jim Kanine said. The Rayders fell to Clare, 69-64, in regional play.

— Craig LaCross hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining as Mackinaw City rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Harbor Light Christian, 48-46, in a Class D district title game. The Comets then fell to Pickford, 67-50, in regional play.

— Chris Johnecheck became only the second Petoskey wrestler to win an individual state title, joining John Evashevski (1971) as the only Northmen to accomplish the feat.

— Pete Spieles, Charlevoix cross country/track coach, announced his retirement would come after the 1992 season. Spieles took the job in 1976 when Walt Drenth, who would go on to achieve All-State honors, asked him to fill in for the season. In his 16 years, Spieles and his teams won seven state titles, had qualified for states every year from 1977-1991, won 13 consecutive conference titles, and had not lost a dual meet since 1979. 

— Bill Taylor of Charlevoix was set to run in his third World Cross Country Championship in Boston.

— Mark Spencley scored 31 points as Mackinaw City defeated Rapid River, 72-69, in a Class D regional semifinal game. In the regional final, the Comets met Gaylord St. Mary and had a 13-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but lost in overtime, 86-84. “Nobody has taken it to us like that all year,” said St. Mary coach Tim Smith, a 1983 Boyne Falls High School graduate.

— Scott Parrish of Charlevoix was named to the Associated Press Class C All-State boys basketball time for the second straight year. Fellow Rayders Jim Shepherd and Patrick Gowell received honorable mention. Parrish averaged 18.5 pionts and 10 rebounds per game.

— Evelyn Wise of Harbor Springs was a late addition to the Class B-C-D All-State ski team. Wise helped the Rams to their third consecutive state title, placing sixth in the slalom, 11th in the giant slalom.
