BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox starter and former Notre Dame pitcher Kyle Weiland was ejected from his major league debut after hitting Baltimore's Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch.
Home plate umpire Marty Foster at first warned Weiland after he hit Guerrero, then Weiland apparently said something he shouldn't have and Foster quickly tossed him. Weiland, who allowed six runs on eight hits, received a warm ovation from the fans as he left the field.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona was then ejected after arguing in defense of his rookie pitcher. Francona, a former Silver Hawks manager, spent a few minutes arguing the call, then headed to join Weiland in the clubhouse.
Foster had previously issued warnings to both teams, in a series that has been marked by hit batsmen.
Weiland also hit former Silver Hawks player Mark Reynolds with a pitch in the third inning. Then after Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie hit Kevin Youkilis in the fourth inning, Foster issued warnings to both teams.
