Nate Leeper can throw the short pass, the long ball, the screen, and the fade. He can run play action, run the keeper, and keep the play alive. He has led Bremen to an undefeated season.
But modesty may be his greatest attribute.
"Decent,” is how Leeper responded when asked to characterize the year he’s had.
“Could be better. I make little mistakes, and I should carry out my fakes more,” he said. “But it's just things that I need to be working on."
"He said earlier that he needs to worry about his fakes,” Bremen coach Bob Holmes said, “but what he doesn't give himself credit for is how well he's progressed.”
Leeper has been Bremen's quarterback the past three years, since his sophomore year. And it is no coincidence that the year he's blossomed, so has his team.
"He used to force passes and turn the ball over last year,” Holmes said. “This year he understands that if it's not there, he'll tuck it and run or throw it away and give us a fighting chance at the next down. You can't teach these experiences other than letting the kids play the game, him being a three-year starter is what sets him apart from a lot of other quarterbacks in the area."
His running back Braxston Miller and receiver Ben Hueni are Leeper’s best weapons.
But Leeper, in his typical modesty, is quick to give them the credit they deserve.
"[They make things] a lot easier,” Leeper said. “Just give them the ball and let them do what they do. That's all I do."
