Big wins for the Notre Dame men's basketball team -- and there have
been a bunch in the last 365 days -- often are gauged in importance by
the number of cell phone messages for coach Mike Brey.
When Notre Dame grabbed national headlines with a Big East win at
then-No. 2 Pittsburgh -- a victory that was one year ago Tuesday -- Brey
had 55 messages waiting after he climbed aboard the team bus.
On Saturday, once a sellout crowd that stormed the Purcell Pavilion
floor had left for home following the 67-58 victory over then-No. 1
and previously undefeated Syracuse, Brey retreated to the quiet of his
corner office in the Joyce Center and glanced at his phone.
There were 90 text and voicemail messages.
"I guess that's the biggest win we've had," Brey said Monday. "You
save some of those voicemails for a while. Those are special."
Some were predictable -- from his parents in Florida, from legendary
DeMatha Catholic High School coach and mentor Morgan Wootten, from
Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who served with Brey on the Duke coaching
staff in the early 1990s.
"It was neat to hear from people and, quite frankly, they were more
juiced than me," Brey said. "I was starting to come down a little bit
