Achonwa headed to Olympic Games
The Canadians locked up a berth in the Games on Sunday by defeating Japan, 71-63, in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Ankara, Turkey.
Achonwa, who is from Guelph, Ontario, played in four of Canada's five games at the tournament, missing the final game with an ankle injury suffered Saturday during her team's 58-41 semifinal win over Argentina.
Prior to her injury, Achonwa averaged 4.5 points in a reserve role, and she is expected to be cleared to resume competition in time for the Olympics.
Canada has been placed in Group B for the 12-team Olympic tournament, joining Australia, Brazil, France, Great Britain and Russia in that division.
It will be Canada's first Olympic appearance since the 2000 Sydney Games, when it finished in 10th place.
Achonwa is the second current or former Irish player to reach the Olympics. Ruth Riley helped the United States to the gold medal in 2004.
