SOUTH BEND — Hundreds of amateur cycling competitors from across the Midwest and their fans are expected to converge on South Bend this weekend for the 2012 Subaru Race the Bend Criterium Challenge Series.
Riders in junior, men’s, women’s and master’s categories will compete from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Howard Park Criterium presented by ProForm Multisport of South Bend. The 0.6-mile, three-corner course will sweep along the St. Joseph River on South St. Louis and Northside boulevards before turning into the neighborhoods along South Notre Dame Avenue and East Wayne Street.
Racers in these categories and their fans will return Sunday for the Downtown South Bend Criterium presented by Spin Zone Cycling Outfitters of Granger.
Races are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. over a 0.8-mile, six-turn circuit by the College Football Hall of Fame, through the Michigan Street business district and past Century Center.
Some $7,000 in prize money and scores of prizes will be awarded over the course of the two days.
