Watch Sam Schrader play, and you see there are a lot of things he does well.
There's one thing you won't see, but it might be what Schrader does best of all — takes constructive criticism.
"You want a guy that when you get on him doesn't take it personal," said Mishawaka football coach Bart Curtis. "You can get on him, get after him in film, nothing gets him down.
That's the attitude Schrader takes into games, too — not letting tacklers get him down.
"He's that way in everything," said Curtis. "If we're playing Monopoly, he's out there to win. And he's going to knock the board over if it looks like he can't win."
As capable as he might be at knocking things over, Schrader is just as good at picking things up, as in picking up his teammates by being a leader.
"Whether it's you're getting down or someone else, you've got to keep the team together," said Schrader. "That's hard when there's adversity, but that's when you learn what kind of group you have. You've got to overcome adversity, be the leader, be the one that everyone can look to with an even head and just keep the team moving on forward where you've got to be going."
"Always been a fierce competitor," said Curtis. "But I really see him caring and reaching out even more so and helping out his teammates and really being that positive leader that he has been in the past, but it's really exemplified itself now."
"I think leaders are born, but as you grow, you can be made an even better one," Schrader said.
You won't find a better STUDENT than Schrader either. He carries a 4.1 grade point average and is ranked in the top 20 of his class of roughly 400. Now, that's real leadership.
