The National High School Coaches Association announced that Gehrig Dieter of South Bend Washington High has been named the National High School Athlete of the Month for September.
“The NHSCA is proud to honor Gehrig Dieter as its September Athlete of the Month,” NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. “He embodies the characteristics of the student-athlete that lead to success on and off the field.”
Named for Hall of Fame baseball player Lou Gehrig, Dieter, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver and cornerback, who runs a 4.55 40, set a national high school record Sept. 2 with 447 receiving yards (on 12 receptions) in a 63-10 victory over Elkhart Central High.
The previous record was 421 yards by J.D. Felice of Rose Bud (Ark.) High in 2008.
That record came two weeks after Dieter set the state record with 373 receiving yards (on eight receptions, five for touchdowns) in a 46-23 victory over Class 5A Bloomington North High, earning him U.S. Air Force National Player of the Week honors, as well as the WSBT Outstanding Student-Athlete of the week honors.
