ELKHART - Kevin Downey has resigned as the head football coach at Elkhart Memorial to spend more ime with his family.

Downey told WSBT sports, "I resigned from coaching to spend more time and focus on my family."

Downey has been a head football coach for the past nine years, the last two at Memorial high school.  He has four children, and his wife is pregnant with their fifth.

"We appreciate the time and effort that Coach Downey has poured into our football program," Memorial athletic director Frank Kurth said in a statement.

"He has been an excellent role model for our athletes and coaching staff. We have a very good foundation in place for Charger football and we wish him well in his future endeavors."

Downey replaced legendary Charger coach Phil Teegarden who retired in 2010, after seven seasons as the head coach at South Bend St. Joseph's.

Downey had an 11-11 record in two years coaching at Memorial.  He will remain at Memorial as a teacher.
