Matt Romine's Notre Dame football career ended this past winter when he was not among the small handful of Irish seniors both eligible and welcome to return for a fifth year.
The offensive tackle has since found a way to sort of reincarnate.
Romine confirmed to the Tulsa (Okla.) World on Wednesday that he has enrolled in graduate school at the University of Tulsa and will play for the Golden Hurricane in 2011.
A fairly recent NCAA rule regarding grad school transfers allows Romine to play without having to sit out the customary one season. He will be reunited with his former high school coach, Bill Blankenship, Tulsa's first-year head coach.
Romine, a former standout at Tulsa's Union High, played in 24 games over four seasons for the Irish, including nine in the 2010 campaign. That included the only starts of his career (Pitt, Western Michigan, Navy) when starting right tackle Taylor Dever was out with an injury.
"I had a lot of long talks with the coaches (at Tulsa) and one final talk with (ND) coach (Brian) Kelly," Romine told the Tulsa World, adding that he was glad for the opportunity to attend Notre Dame. "(Kelly) knew my former high school coach was the head coach at Tulsa. He wished me luck and sent me on my way."
