My favorite things about high school football

A new season of high school football kicks off in just a couple of days...and optimism is high in locker rooms, weight rooms and class rooms all across northern Indiana.

Here are just a few things I'm looking forward to this fall:

The new look Niles Vikings.  Can Antwon Jones transform the VIkings program like he did South Bend Washington?  If so, Friday nights in Niles will be exciting.

Likewise, I'm looking forward to seeing what Jay Johnson can do as he takes over at Washington.  I've known Jay a long time, and I think he's great for the program.  You'll see what I'm talking about soon enough.

I'm looking forward to the season opening rivalries:  The Battle for the Mangy Lion in Elkhart. Not to mention NorthWood at Jimtown, and Bremen at Plymouth!  No such thing as a tune-up for those teams!

Not sure what I'm looking forward to more.  Seeing if St. Joe can make it to state for a THIRD time in 3 years under coach Ben Downey?  Or seeing that new field!  St. Joe is long overdue for a home game!  Glad that'll finally change.

Speaking of Ben Downey:  We've got great coaches in this area.  Cory Yeoman has more conference titles than conference losses.  You can say the same for Mike Campbell at Jimtown.

Ever had a conversation with Mishawaka's Bart Curtis?  You should.

Can you curl as much weight as Clay's Joe Szjako?  I doubt it.

Who am I to tell Concord's Tim Dawson not to wear shorts on a snowy night in November?  He's the one who's still in the playoffs.

There's nothing like football season.  I look forward to these Friday Nights all week long.  And they're finally back.

Hey Michiana...are your ready for some football?
