SOUTH BEND – If there were any remaining doubts about what conference Notre Dame’s No. 1-ranked hockey team would be joining for 2013-2014, they can certainly end now.
A press release sent by Notre Dame on behalf of the Hockey East Association announced that there will be a press conference on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) at Notre Dame’s new Compton Family Ice Arena.
According to the release, Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna, along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, Boston University athletic director Mike Lynch and Irish head coach Jeff Jackson will participate.
Speculation all but ended Sunday when the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced that it would open the 2013-2014 season with the eight teams that had already joined.
Notre Dame was not one of those. And last week, Jackson had said it was down to Hockey East and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
The national shake-up of the collegiate hockey conferences began in April, when the Big Ten announced it would have its own conference in 2013-2014 season, in part because of Penn State fielding a Division I team.
The Hockey East Association currently consists of Boston College, Boston University, Maine, Providence, University of Massachusetts, U-Mass-Lowell, New Hampshire, Vermont, Northeastern and Merrimack.
