Coaches know how to read far beyond the numbers on a stat sheet. They
understand the story behind the numbers.
When Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw studied the
stat sheet from Saturday’s 66-38 whipping of No. 12 Purdue, she
focused on the line for 6-foot-2 senior forward Devereaux Peters.
McGraw saw past the 16 points, and understood the significance of
Peters taking 17 shots.
“Devereaux had a great game, 16 points, 11 rebounds,” McGraw said.
“She took 17 shots. For her to be taking that many shots is unusual.
That just shows how hard she was working to get open and running the
floor and how much we were looking for her.
“I’d like to see her get that number of shots more frequently. She
rarely takes 10 shots. We would definitely like to get the ball inside
more.”
Peters benefited from a masterful game by Irish floor general Skylar
Diggins. She set the tone for Notre Dame’s biggest margin of victory
against Purdue. She led Notre Dame to a 16-5 lead, scoring eight
points, passing for two assists and swatting away a Boilermaker shot.
When the Boilermakers collapsed on her, she dished to Peters.
