Marian senior running back Michael Whitfield has been hearing the same criticism his whole career.

"He can't run inside, he's too small," Whitfield recalled. "I like to use that as motivation to show them that I can."

Whitfield has indeed done more.  He scored FIVE touchdowns in the Marian season opener two weeks ago, proving once again that a big will trumps a big frame.

"It's about getting it done on the field and performing," Whitfield said. "It's not about size.

"My team needs me in that position, so I want to be there for my teammates.  I can't take all the credit.  The offensive line does well but I want to be that guy that if we need a 'go-to guy' I'll be there."

Whitfield is responsible for two-thirds of Marian's touchdowns this season, and his play has gotten the attention of several Big Ten programs.

"Indiana, Central Michigan, Ball State, Illinois," Marian coach Reggie Glon said. "I'm sure if he has a few more nights like he did in the first week, there's going to be more people interested.
