This past Saturday, Warsaw's Ashley Erba set a new course record and conference record as she blew away the rest of the pack.

And she wasn't even running her hardest.

"The season's just beginning in some ways for me," Erba said. "I've been kind of working on just building up in races, having strong experiences, and really bringing it later."

Erba has her eyes on a bigger prize. She's gearing up to defend her state title, and then for nationals. But she did really bring it at a race last month, clocking a time of 17:13.7 time at Culver, which is the fastest any high school girl has ever run a 5K in Indiana history.

"What pushes me is mostly internal," she said. "If I reached the things I wanna achieve in the postseason I think I knew that the record would eventually come down."

"A lot of the workouts we do are based on pacing, and on building strength," said her coach and father, Scott Erba. "And that's how she's able to run her best is running that way. It's just been a consistency of training over the last four years."

And it's really saying something when a conference title isn't even the highlight of your day.
After Saturday's race, Erba hopped on a plane to take an official visit at Georgetown, the defending NCAA  champs. She'll have her pick of the top college programs.

"I'm very excited," she said. "I can't say exactly where I want to go yet because I don't know, but it's going to be an exciting future."
