You can't talk about Chad Gindelberger without also talking about Zach Oakley.
And Gindelberger's OK with that.
"One thing I like about what's going on is there's not a lot of jealously going on,” Gindelberger said. “We both push each other, we both help each other out."
You see, Gindelberger is Penn's starting quarterback. But he's not its only quarterback. He splits that duty with Oakley.
"It's only a controversy if things aren't going well,” Penn coach Cory Yeoman said. “And right now things are going well for both of them."
The reason it's going well is that Gindelberger, a senior, is not only leading the offense by making big plays; but instead of being bitter about this sophomore coming in and taking half his playing time, he's welcomed it."
"I haven't started in years,” Gindelberger said. “And I wanted to prove to people that I could start. I wanted to be a leader. And being a leader means not causing trouble. It means trying to make your team as best as you can make it.
“I feel that just made this whole offense a lot better just because there's no conflict going on."
"Trust me, I know he'd like to be in there every snap at quarterback and so would Zach,” Yeoman said. “But wherever they are, I know they're going to compete and they're going to make big plays somewhere on the field."
Like this one. So don't get this wrong - Gindelberger has a lot more going for him than just selflessness.
"It puts another running back in the backfield,” Yeoman said. “And that means a lot."
"They trust me to run the ball, they trust Zach to run the ball, I trust my receivers to catch the ball,” Gindelberger said. “We're doing it together because we're a team."
He plays WR when Oakley is in at QB. Oakley plays QB when Gindelberger is in at QB. Gindelberger has a 3.44 GPA and wants to be a vet.
