It might look like Thomas Labuzienski is beating you with his feet. But it's actually something else.

"Tom is a very smart individual, as you very well know from his academics," coach Alberto Verteramo said.

Let's start there. Labuzienski is eighth in his senior class with a 4.3 grade point average.

"It's going to be a stepping stone to college,” Labuzienski said. “Get my career on track."

And it’s those same smarts that are Labuzienski's greatest asset on the soccer field.

"His vision is really good,” Verteramo said. “Being so smart out there and being able to analyze the game and seeing how the game develops."

"I'm looking around more, finding my vision in the field,” Labuzienski added. “I've just been working on that so my passes are better, my positioning is better."

All of that has turned him into one of the area's best defenders, and a key cog in St. Joe's sectional championship team.

"The adrenaline gets pumping and I just give it my all," he said.

And go figure, when he hits college next fall, he'll be combining the two.

"Sports marketing or sports management," Labuzienski said.
