You can't really start to tell Ashley Campbell's story without first finishing Gabi Minix's.
Minix, a former Oregon-Davis star and WSBT Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year, parlayed a great high school career into a full ride to play at Marquette.
When she left, she left her job to Campbell.
"I had a lot of shoes to fill," Campbell said. "Gabi Minix, she was the main player and I knew I had to step up as a point guard and lead the team, so I did as much as I can as a freshman. And now, as a sophomore, I'm going to try to do the same and step up and be a better player."
She's done exactly that. Campbell is one of the leading scorers in the area, averaging 18 points a game, but it's her passing that makes her stand out.
"She's a true point guard," said Oregon-Davis coach Terry Minix, who also happens to be Gabi Minix's father.
"I could care less about scoring," Campbell said. "For me, it's more about getting my teammates open and letting them get the shot because - it's not necessarily that I don't want to be a ball hog or anything - but I'll take my shot when I know it's there, but I'd rather give my teammates a shot before I take a shot."
All things she learned from Gabi Minix.
"She really watched her and learned," Terry Minix said. "And she's kind of a sponge when it comes to that type of stuff."
"When I was younger, I really wanted to play like Gabi," Campbell said. "And I thrived off of her and she inspired me and I wanted to be just like her. But now, I kind of want to make my own legacy as a player."
And that's exactly what her coach believes will happen.
"No doubt," Terry Minix said. "The sky is the limit. You hear that term all the time but I think as hard as she works - she's got some improvement to do - but she's only a sophomore. So I think in time you're going to see she's going to be one of the best players in the state of Indiana."
