SOUTH BEND -- If Notre Dame had a football game this Saturday, the Irish might be looking for a fill-in at quarterback and at middle linebacker.

As it stands, the knee sprains suffered by QB Tommy Rees and linebacker Manti Te’o in Friday’s 33-17 Hyundai Sun Bowl victory over Miami in El Paso, Texas, will simply require rest. And the two have plenty of time to do that and recover fully long before spring practice kicks off in Mid-March.

Two other Irish players sustained injuries that will require surgery, but they too should be ready for spring practice.

Pro-active

Irish seniors Ian Williams, a nose guard, and Armando Allen, a running back, have been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Feb. 23-March 1 in Indianapolis. Allen missed the final five games of the season with a hip injury that required surgery.

Cornerback Darrin Walls is listed as an alternate.

Williams also has been invited to the Senior Bowl, Jan. 29 in Mobile, Ala., the most prestigious of the postseason college all-star games and NFL Draft showcases.

Walls was selected for the East-West Shrine Game, Jan. 22 in Orlando, while offensive guard Chris Stewart will play in the Texas vs. The Nation game, Feb. 5 in San Antonio, Texas.
