The 104th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State tournament got off to a fantastic start thanks in part to a couple of buzzer-beaters in biggest games of the night.
Just by looking at the schedule, it was easy to pick the two "best games" in Central Indiana.
Class 4A Sectional 8: #1 Hamilton Southeastern vs #3 North Central
Class 4A Sectional 10: (16-4) Arsenal Tech vs (14-6) Lawrence Central.
These two games lived up to the hype in every way as Hamilton Southeastern beat North Central 86-83, and Lawrence Central knocked off Tech 61-59.
While the Royals Gary Harris might've wrapped up the Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball Award thanks to his 22-point fourth quarter that included a 35-foot buzzer beater to defeat North Central, do not forget the heroic performance by another All-Star in Lawrence Central's victory over Tech.
Jeremy Hollowell did what Gary Harris did at the end of regulation with the score tied in the most important game of the season.
In true Jimmy Chitwood fashion, Hollowell asked for the ball with 5.3 seconds remaining in a tie game.
"That's how Jeremy drew it up, he said 'Coach, let me pop to the corner and I'll go one-on-one' I said you got it kid, let's go do it," commented an ecstatic Lawrence Central coach J.R. Shelt Tuesday.
Shelt is a smart basketball mind, but he understands when it is time to give instructions and when it is time to let your players make the call. This was an instance where Hollowell would not be denied.
"I just was trying to get all the way to the basket, either get fouled or finish," said Hollowell rather simply while discussing a performance that was anything but easy.
Tech took control of the game in the first quarter jumping out to a 15-4 lead. Jason Delaney's Titans got to every loose and looked as though they might run away and hide thanks in part to the dominant play inside by sophomore Trey Lyles on both ends of the court.
However, the Bears gained control of the game in the second quarter thanks in part to a stingy zone defense and a "do whatever it takes" attitude.
"This shows how much I want to win, I want to go out with a State Title, by any means, I'm just going to do whatever it takes," said Hollowell.
And Shelt will continue to call on the future Indiana Hoosier should the Bears be in another "game on the line" situation.
"He's a senior. He's an Indiana All-Star Candidate, Mr. Basketball Candidate. So if I can't trust him to make those decisions, to make the plays, I don't know who you can trust," said Shelt.
This just in...You can trust Gary Harris & Jeremy Hollowell to make the big plays in the clutch. It has been a pleasure watching them in high school and we'll continue to see them shine in college, however both appear focused on IHSAA goals in the next few weeks.
