Verbatim: Ballard delivers State of the City

Indianapolis

It is a place for them to work, play, and collaborate.

It opened for business in February and has a huge membership waiting list.

These two establishments here on Winthrop Avenue are symbolic of the fantastic growth and success of the South Broad Ripple neighborhood.

The start-up energy clustered here attracts other talent, so their business customers, their collaborators, and their competitors start taking root.

And so the connections grow.

Then retail businesses come in to support them, like salons and restaurants, and cafes, and produce shops.

So the connections grow.

A neighborhood sparsely dotted with commercial businesses along 54th Street just ten years ago is now anchored by an incredible start up community and all of the energy and brain power and promise and prosperity that come with that.

That is why we are here at this location: To reflect on and applaud the growing bonds across our City. This Culture of Connectivity has the power and it has the enthusiasm to lift up entire neighborhoods and to create economic opportunities for all who call Indianapolis home.

DeveloperTown, the Speak Easy, and others in SoBro here are just the tip of the iceberg.

Earth House, Verge, and Techpoint are also nurturing and grooming Indy’s vibrant and varied start-ups.

These businesses are delivering, here and now.

For example cause.it, an innovative app developed by 20-year old whiz kid Gagan Dillon, just had its Indianapolis roll out last month in partnership with the City of Indianapolis.

Cause.it matches the real-time needs of the community with the dynamic capabilities of our talented residents using an innovative volunteer recruitment tool.

In fact, some of you may recall that I helped pitch cause.it at a Verge session last October!

What is happening here, in South Broad Ripple, and in our start up community, is happening all over our city.

Successes are sprouting up in physical spaces, and in virtual spaces, through a growing culture of connectivity.

Let’s look to 16 Tech.

There, we are connecting to grow a technology district that will broadcast our city’s benefits to the world and allow us to build upon a long-standing core capability, our science and technology industries.

We are connecting all of the vital pieces of the puzzle: work, live, play, and learn, to make 16 Tech a sustainable and unified community.
