We South Dakotans are known for our conservative natures. We only buy things after some long talks with our conscience and after checking our pocketbook many times. Normally, we talk ourselves right out of a purchase, but sometimes it's okay to buy things on impulse. Ya just never know when it will come in handy. Let me explain.
Novelty shop buying
Last summer, I went on a trip with several of my retired teacher friends. We were on our way to a state convention in Pierre and made a stop in Miller for fuel and a coffee break. Naturally, we women had to do a little shopping and ended up in a novelty shop with some neat, neat items just begging to be purchased.
Well, I'm not much for buying things on impulse, but I threw caution to the wind and purchased a metal wall decoration with a wonderful message. At the time, I didn't have a clue why I bought it or where I was going to put it in our home.
Placement of the wall hanging definitely proved to be a problem. At first, I hung it in the kitchen because country people spend a lot of time there, and I thought everyone would read it and appreciate the message. However, the old maxim about the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray came true. No one was reading the words on the wall hanging, or if they were reading the words, they weren't responding to its message. So, I moved it to the bathroom.
The bathroom! Why the bathroom? Well, since we all spend a great deal of time doing our daily cogitation duties in the bathroom, then maybe, just maybe the message would be read, cogitated, and appreciated. And that's exactly what happened. Location, location, location - proved to be the vital element necessary for the wall hanging to do its magic. I leave it to your imagination as to where it is located in our bathroom, but I will tell you that the wall hanging is situated at eye level for easy reading while seated. Ya just can't miss it.
Laughter is the best medicine
People come out of our bathroom smiling and even laughing. Yes, they have done their daily duty, which probably makes them smile, but they have also had the time to read and reflect upon the message inscribed on the wall hanging. Its message possibly makes them laugh because only crazy people continue to live on farms after a winter such as this one. Or, maybe they are laughing because the message has a spark of truth to it - that we need each other to survive. Whatever the reason, the wall hanging has done its magic and delivered its important message.
Thoughts to Ponder
So, my impulsive purchase of this past summer has come in handy this winter. It has provided some laughter and given everyone some thoughts to ponder. Those thoughts might include: Only people who are touched in the head or slightly crazy would continue to try to make a living in such a harsh climate like ours. So, why are we still here? Simple. It's because we love our way of life and we love doing it together.
Oh, I forgot something. I forgot to reveal the wall hanging's message. And you know, this message is such a powerful one that I think it can do one more great thing for all of us. It can be used as an expression of love for your one and only. Here it is:
We may not have it all together,
But together we have it all.
