A team of middle school Mathletes from Boyle County Middle School won the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers Capital Chapter MathCounts competition.
The top individual was Levi Wilson from Anderson County Middle School. Nick Fluty of Boyle County Middle School and Antuan Lemon of Bondurant Middle School placed second and third, respectively.
Western Kentucky University awarded scholarships to the top three scoring individuals. Levi won a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to WKU, and Nick and Antuan won four-year awards of $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Members of the winning team are: Nick Fluty, Wesley Wei, Malik Allahham and Chance Naylor. Victoria Brushway is the coach and Sam Fluty is the assistant coach. The team now will advance to the state competition March 23 in Lexington.
Due to his individual performance, a fifth student from Boyle County Middle School, Jackson King (fifth overall individual), also will advance to the state competition in March.
The second- and third-place teams are of Anderson County Middle School and Good Shepherd School, respectively.
In an increasingly technological society, students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career. As a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MathCounts prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than six million students across the U.S. have participated in the program.
The KSPE Capital Chapter program is sponsored by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, HMB Professional Engineers, Graviss McDonalds (of Frankfort and Versailles), Harrod & Associates, Kenvirons, DLZ Engineers, Classic Blinds (of Georgetown) and Farmer’s Bank & Capital Trust Company.
