Frances Lee Hodges Holland of Capron, Va., died peacefully on Saturday, November 24 in Lexington, Ky., while visiting family for the Thanksgiving holiday. She was born in Capron, Va., to Daphne and John Mason Hodges on October 25, 1920.
She was a kind and gracious woman of many talents. Her active and independent life included travel, painting, foreign language, jewelry design, music appreciation, gardening, needlework, all types of dance and many outdoor recreational activities. She was a life-long learner whose interests, generosity and courage were unbounded.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Lee Holland Simpson (David) of Danville, Ky., and son, William Peyton Holland (Jane) of Deerfield, Wis. She was predeceased by son Robert Debnam Holland. She was the much beloved grandmother of Melanie, Annabel, Rebecca, Robert, Rick and Katherine. Her great-granddaughters Matilda Lilee Berry and Zoe Lee Hull will miss her so much. Her devoted brother, Kilby Hodges (Edna) resides in Capron.
She was a resident of Danville, Ky., at Centre College from 1947 to 1949 during the post-war education of her former husband, Robert Debnam Holland. She was a frequent visitor here and loved the beauty and grace of this small town.
She loved Virginia in all seasons and most of all in April. A memorial service will be held there in springtime.
