3. Dog Tails and Myths

I still hear the same dog myths today that I remember hearing as a child. Call them myths, ol' wives' tails, folklore or superstitions, but they are not true and in fact may be just bad advice. They have been passed down from the Great and Powerful OZ and, even still, reside in the gospel of digital Dr. Google. There is no doubt that you will shudder and balk at the blasphemy against hundreds of years of “proof” that these fallacies are fact. It will rock the very core of your dog knowledge that you have rooted and passed on to all others who seek your mentoring and advice because you are….. “Dog Person”! If these “facts” as you know them are false, what else in this world can be true? Next thing you are going to tell me is that Lassie wasn’t a real show about saving the life of little Timmy every week and, worse yet, Lassie was a boy dog!

One of the most intimidating moments for a novice painter is staring at a blank canvas before adding the first stroke of color. It can feel as paralyzing as a blank screen to a writer (this writer included). Only there is no backspace. But a new locally...

  11. South Bend drummer teaches self to drum again after brain injury

SOUTH BEND -- Billy Canty takes a seat on the throne of his basement studio drumset. After tightening a loose hi-hat cymbal and shaking out his hands: he plays. He plays something he “made up” – a sort of jazzy, punchy beat as a smile creeps from the corners of his pursed lips. A framed picture of Billy and his wife, Kasey, sits on a nearby table as he plays – but he doesn’t remember the picture being taken, or the day at all for that matter. Billy plays because it’s all he feels he can do, the only thing that keeps him sane, and one of the few things left he has to hold on to.
