9. Directors discuss the work and play angles

In the costly and time-intensive discipline of animated filmmaking, every movie comes with high stakes. Five directors who recently came together for the first Envelope Animation Round Table discussed the artistic and business demands of the medium. In a conversation at the Los Angeles Times, Mark Andrews ("Brave," with Brenda Chapman), Chris Butler ("ParaNorman," with Sam Fell), Rich Moore ('Wreck-It Ralph"), Peter Ramsey ("Rise of the Guardians") and Genndy Tartakovsky ("Hotel Transylvania") tackled topics such as how they pitch their ideas, approach voice actors and handle the limitations that come from playing strictly to family audiences.

17. 'The Comedy' needs better material: ★

If it weren't for Kate Lyn Sheil, who has a couple of scenes as a blase Brooklyn waitress inexplicably ending up in the protagonist's bed, "The Comedy" might well have qualified as the worst film of 2012. This portrait of the desultory white male as failed improviser stars Tim Heidecker, one half of the semipopular duo with Eric Wareheim (on TV, "Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!"; on film, "Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie"). Wareheim shows up here as well, as one of the Heidecker character's PBR-swilling pals. But it's Heidecker's show, intended to take things in a darker direction that he has traveled before.

19. 'The Comedy' review: A billion times better than 'Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie'

***1/2 (out of four)
***1/2 (out of four) From a perspective I’d characterize as “wrong,” “The Comedy” could be seen as the tragedy of the rich white man. Swanson (Tim Heidecker of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”) has a lot...

23. At the Apollo, crowds demand their '50 Shades'

Last Saturday night in Chicago, three theatrical producers from out of town (one American, one Canadian, one British) all showed up to see the same show. They were joined by one of Broadway's more powerful booking agents, who was seeing the show for a second time, and by two leading press agents and one of the several Chicagoans known for investing money in commercial shows.
