1. Photo editing with the iPad mini

Framework
Certainly I didn't need an iPad Mini. With that said, it was number one on my want list. Sure it's probably overpriced compared to the Amazon Kindle Fire and it's just $140 dollars cheaper than the iPad 3 with it's retina screen. It just seems like the...

7. Album review: Redd Kross, 'Researching the Blues'

It’s odd to think of Los Angeles punk band Redd Kross as a legacy act, considering its bassist Steven McDonald learned his instrument at age 11, shortly before he and older brother Jeff, 15, opened for Black Flag in the early ’80s. But more than three decades later, here they are, delivering the kind of fuzzed-out melodies and explosive girl-group harmonies that at their 1980s prime propelled them to near-stardom.

11. Eddie Vedder surprises with Cat Power, Glen Hansard duets in Fort Lauderdale

In 2011, the Seattle-based rock band Pearl Jam celebrated 20 years in a business that is seldom kind to artists with a taste for longevity, and the group feted itself with an international tour, a Cameron Crowe-directed theatrical documentary and a career-spanning anthology. If it was an act of self-congratulation, it was a well-deserved one, as the band had survived the grunge trend, overnight success, a war with Ticketmaster, the ascendance of hip-hop and the waning of rock. The anniversary offered Pearl Jam an opportunity to take a breath, take stock and say to itself and its fans, “Look where we are, and look where we’ve been.” Left unstated, however, was the question, “Now, where do we go?”

13. CT.com's Best Albums of 2012

Is it us or was 2012 the year of streaming music? It seems like most everyone we know is now listening to music — new music, old music, super-obscure music, pop bubble gum, the latest releases, old-school hip-hop, brutal metal, avant classical, out jazz, indie flavor-of-the-day, guilty pleasures, and almost everything else — on Spotify, Pandora or Rdio or some other streaming service. (Trent Reznor is supposed to launch yet another music-streaming site early next year, this one with supposedly new ways of helping listeners navigate the overwhelming volume of music that's available.) Except for those music-giant holdouts who haven't yet permitted the licensing of their choicest songs — Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, um, Bob Seger — it's all basically out there. That means that music fans, especially the older kind who like new music but never quite learned to embrace the outlaw thrill of file-sharing, can get a taste of what 2012 sounds like without all of those so-2008 encumbrances like MP3 players or hard drives or, god forbid, CDs. In some ways the near-limitlessness of streaming music has served to reinforce whatever genre bubble many of us were already stuck in. Many of us have listened to more new music in 2012 than in years. And so when it came time to assemble our list of music-you-should-have-heard 2012, this year was maybe a little easier. But at the same time, the flood of good new releases forces us to steer clear of making any definitive or comprehensive statement about the nature of music in 2012. Our list, as you can see, is pretty skewed toward indie rock and metal. That's where our preferences lie. Jazz, hip-hop, country, classical and a million other subgenres go mostly overlooked here. But the ether flows with more new music — in all those genres — than you could probably listen to in a lifetime. If you've never heard of these titles, check out something that might be unexpected. If this music leaves you scratching your head, questioning our good taste, let us know what struck your ears as awesome this year.

15. No mystery here: Soundgarden is back

Of all the bands that emerged from Seattle's so-called grunge scene in the early 1990s — think of the moody, flannel-clad likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains — none was harder to pin down than Soundgarden.

I am getting so confused with photography. When I first started out over 50 years ago, life was simple. Photography just meant a roll of Kodak Tri-X-400 black-and-white film, my old Minolta camera, and off I went. The only thing I worried about was f-...
