15. 'The Childs Child' by Ruth Rendell is sluggish and obvious

If there were a Mount Rushmore of English crime fiction, it would feature the chiseled faces of Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. (Yes, all women, but that's another essay.) Of this august quartet, Rendell is perhaps the simplest and therefore best writer — the most authoritative voice on the page, celebrated for a peculiarly British matter-of-factness. When she or her narrators tell you something, they do it so crisply and definitively that you're compelled to believe it; any other course of action would be foolhardy, and you have a feeling that the author never suffers fools gladly, or indeed at all. Reading one of her books, you unconsciously sit up straight, as if at any moment Baroness Rendell (as she's known these days in the House of Lords) might enter the room and fix you with a cold, correcting stare.
