  1. Got stock?

Turkey stock may be to Thanksgiving feast what Windex was to the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding": A miracle cure-all elixir. So useful is it that journalist Sam Sifton calls it "a Thanksgiving secret weapon" that can carry you from pre-feast prep to the inevitable question of what to do with the leftover carcass days after the holiday.

  3. Beef brisket wanted

Q: A good friend of mine is seeking a recipe for beef brisket which she had cut out last year but now has lost.  It was a good one and she wants to make it for a special event this weekend.   She says the recipe ran last year and ran about the time of a Jewish holiday; was a lead piece in the section.  Would appreciate any help you can give. She is an avid reader of the Tribune's food section.

  5. Pining for Best's Kosher Franks

Q: I write you from autumnal New England with one quick question about a Chicago food tradition, Best's Kosher Franks, which were made in the Windy City for a long, long time. They were the absolute best frankfurters available (even here in Massachusetts) and were gobbled up and disposed of by Sarah Lee. Has anyone revived the recipe?

  7. Buttermilk beyond the biscuit

Q: Years ago when dairies in Illinois sold pure buttermilk it was awesome. Today most buttermilk is too far pasteurized and does not taste the same. I have been searching online for places to buy the good old-fashioned buttermilk and to my amazement, no luck. My question is: Would you have an idea where I can get good old-fashioned buttermilk?

  9. A tale of Tater Tots

The Brothers Grigg had just started a frozen food company to make, among other things, french fries. But what to do with the scraps of spud left behind? These potato pieces were too small for proper fries, but there were too many of them to be discarded.

  11. Bitter goodness

Bitter foods are usually good-for-you foods; a proverbial pill of truth many people may find hard to swallow. But Barb Stuckey would like people to give them a try.

  13. Enjoy vegetable-centric diet

Now, this time between seasons, is when garden plots everywhere are brimming over with bounty — and choices. Use this golden moment to experiment with all that growing greenery. Don't relegate vegetables to side dishes, let 'em be the stars of dinner.

  15. Vegetarian meals: Ideas?

Q: Hubby is dieting by eating vegetarian as often as possible. It's been a week, and he is getting bored quickly. Do you have any recommendations for some vegetarian dinner meals that are nutritionally complete, and are not simply variations of chili?

  17. That old fruitcake magic

Q: When I got married, for our first Christmas, I decided to bake a fruitcake for the first time. The thinking was that if it was made from scratch it would be much better than those horrors sold in the stores. The Betty Crocker yellow fruitcake recipe was used substituting butter for the shortening.

  21. New vegan book aimed at kids stirs debate

Getting kids to eat healthfully and well is a perennial challenge for parents, especially when the younger set begins to make table choices at odds with the familial norm or, to put it more starkly, flatly refuse to eat what mom and dad have made for dinner. Now comes a new children's book, "Vegan is Love: Having Heart and Taking Action" (North Atlantic Books, $16.95), which may raise tensions in some households.

  23. Looking for a special loaf

Q: Where can one buy English toasting bread in the Chicago area? I bought a loaf earlier this year at a store in the Crest Hill area. But since then have been unable to find it in a store. Worse yet I can't remember the name of the store at which I bought the English toasting bread or the brand name.
