1. Cystic fibrosis gene spreads worry

Dear Amy: Genetic testing shows that my son and I are cystic fibrosis (CF) carriers. Our research shows that most carriers are asymptomatic, as I am, but my son has some pulmonary issues, which is why the testing was done.

  7. Pregnancy interrupts teens' life goals

Dear Amy: I'm 18 years old and months away from graduating from high school. I can't wait to venture into college and see new places. The only downside is that my girlfriend of 15 months is pregnant. It was a big shock. It feels as if everything I was planning is thrown away and I will never be able to experience the college life and get a good job.

  9. Writers writing about writing: 'Why We Write'

Joan Didion had it right. In her 1976 essay “Why I Write,” originally published in the New York Times Book Review, she lays out the template in no uncertain terms: “In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind. It’s an aggressive, even a hostile act. You can disguise its qualifiers and tentative subjunctives, with ellipses and evasions — with the whole manner of intimating rather than claiming, of alluding rather than stating — but there’s no getting around the fact that setting words on paper is the tactic of a secret bully, an invasion, an imposition of the writer’s sensibility on the reader’s most private space.”

  13. Idling minivan makes neighbor globally warm

Dear Amy: My neighbor has three kids and a minivan. I work at home and often notice she warms her car up for a long time (often 10 minutes or more) from a remote starter. She is polluting the air we all breathe unnecessarily and wasting gas.

  15. Is it time for the National Book Awards to change? Yes.

As a member of the board of the award-bestowing National Book Critics Circle, I tend to look to the National Book Awards as a popular big brother: They are the football to our field hockey, the Oscars to our Independent Spirit Awards, the prizes that tend to capture the public's attention. Both have their place, and the place of the National Book Awards is to lead the national conversation about books.

  21. Savage Love: Double-Crossed

A friend of mine on the opposite coast is a crossdresser considering transitioning. He came out to a female friend he had known for a long time but hadn't seen in a while, and she told her that she wanted her to come to her house fully dressed for some hot sex to "explore her bi-curiosity" or some shit. I told her to go for it, saying gender-transgression play is potentially hot. I neglected to mention that she should only go for it if she trusted this girl (hereafter known as "Evil Bitch"). Evil Bitch backed out as soon as she arrived, but took her out to dinner (still fully dressed) as consolation. When she first told me this, I thought, "Oh well, Evil Bitch got cold feet, that sucks." Now my friend is telling me that Evil Bitch messaged a bunch of mutual friends he wasn't out to, outing my friend to them. After my friend told Evil Bitch that what went down between them was private, Evil Bitch just responded with "LOL k," and THEN posted pictures from their dinner date — fully dressed — on her Facebook. I told my friend to call Evil Bitch up and tell her what a violation of privacy and betrayal of trust that was. She just called him a faggot and hung up. I feel bad because I encouraged her to go for it. Is there anything my friend can do? She's freaking out and thinks that Evil Bitch ruined her life.
