By Ben Blanchard DANDONG, China, May 1 (Reuters) - Peering at graphic pictures of supposed U.S. biological warfare efforts during the 1950-53 Korean War, Zhang Ping tugs on the sleeve of a visiting foreign reporter to complain about the barbarism visited...

It's hard to take a place seriously that bills itself as “the hoppiest place on Earth.”
It's hard to take a place seriously that bills itself as “the hoppiest place on Earth.” But when it comes to keeping my preteen daughters happy, entertained and out of prison, I'll take anything seriously. I am all about high culture and...

9. Review: Petra Schilder invokes another era at Carter & Citizen

Dutch artist Petra Schilder’s exhibition at Carter & Citizen revitalizes a mostly bygone way of life. In the intimate gallery, Schilder has painstakingly constructed a replica of a Dutch smuiger, or fireplace, out of hand-painted ceramic tiles. The tiles, which cover the wall from floor to ceiling, depict a farm landscape dotted with sheep. The hearth is flanked by two chairs holding piles of sheared wool in its raw state, and a chandelier loaded with lumpy brown candles hangs from the ceiling. The whole scene feels a bit like a diorama in a museum display, or an altar to an older way of life.

"Whoa."
"Whoa." That's what the guy who sat behind me said as I settled into a matinee performance of "The Motherf***er With the Hat" at the Steppenwolf Theatre recently: "Whoa, will you look at that? That is something. That is large. I wonder what that'll do?...

15. Recycled art and delving into the depths

I’ve often mentioned the display cases in the front foyer of the Library, but the other day as I was walking through the Youth Department, I realized I had forgotten to mention display cases there that also deserve monthly attention. Really, if you want to give your spirits a lift and your artistic sensibilities a lively tweak, you owe it to yourself to go into the Youth Department to look at their monthly displays.
