The UMBC women’s lacrosse team has announced its 16-game schedule for the 2013 season, including its first game against Maryland in five years and contests against three other teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament a season ago.
“We are very excited to get started with the spring of 2013,” co-coach Amy Appelt said. “We have some great competition next spring. If we want to be the best we have to play the best, so we are very enthusiastic to get the season started.”
The Retrievers open the season on the road against American (Feb. 16) before hosting two straight against California (Feb. 23) and Towson (Feb. 27). UMBC will hit the road again on March 2 for a rematch with Colgate, which the Retrievers defeated, 13-11, at UMBC Stadium last season, followed by a meeting with Maryland on March 5 at College Park.
UMBC opens America East action on March 23 at defending regular-season conference champion Boston University. The Retrievers return for a three-game homestand against Loyola (March 27), Binghamton (April 3) and Stony Brook (April 6).
The Retrivers conclude the regular season at defending America East champion Albany (April 13), vs. Johns Hopkins (April 17), at Vermont (April 20) and at home vs. New Hampshire (April 27).
The Retrievers enter 2013 under new leadership as Appelt and Tony Giro take the reins for their first full season. Giro served as the acting head coach in UMBC’s 7-6 victory over Johns Hopkins in the regular-season finale and the Retrievers' America East semifinal matchup against Stony Brook last season.
